There are 4 books in the Bible that describe the life of Jesus Christ while He was here on earth. They are known as the ‘Gospels’. These books take their names from the authors; the Apostles Matthew and John, Paul’s companion Luke, and Mark who was a cousin of Barnabas (Colossians 4:10) and a helper of Paul. (Acts 12:25, 2 Timothy 4:11) According to ancient tradition, Mark was a friend of Peter from whom he received much of his information. Matthew shows Jesus as the King of the Jews, Luke depicts him as the Son of Man, John portrays Jesus as the Son of God, while Mark, which you are about to study shows him as the Servant of God.
The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four books. The Holy Spirit concentrates on the three and a half years of Jesus’ active ministry, being more concerned with works than words. We shall see Jesus as God’s anointed servant who, “...went everywhere doing good. He healed those who were ruled by the devil, for God was with Jesus.” (Acts 10:38)
As you read, it will become clear that God is calling His children to walk as Jesus walked. Not to be proud and arrogant, but to have the same mind as Jesus who, “...gave up His place with God and made Himself nothing. He was born to be a man and became like a servant. And when He was living as a man, he humbled himself and was fully obedient to God. He obeyed even when it caused His death—death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:7-8)
Please read the following instructions very carefully. They have been written to help you derive the greatest benefit from the study and also help you to answer the questions correctly.
- Always begin each lesson by praying. Ask God to help you, by His Holy Spirit, to understand what you are about to read.
- Take your Bible or New Testament and carefully read the Chapter you are about to study.
- Now read the lesson material for each Chapter in this lesson carefully and slowly, looking up and reading all the Bible references as you go along.
- After you complete all of the Chapters in the lesson, answer the questions in the ‘Your Personal Study’ portion which is on the last page of each lesson. This will help you to be sure that you understand the Scriptures. The correct answers are found at the end of the Lesson. Please compare your own answers to the ones we have provided. Do not return this portion of the Lesson to us.
- Answer the questions in the Examination Sheet at the end of the Lesson, and post it to us for marking.
We pray that this study will not just fill your head with knowledge, but fill your heart with a desire to serve your Heavenly Father.
